Bird Books

Having been birding since the age of 6 I have collected quite a number of books on birds and birdwatching. On this page I list bird books that I own and provide some commentary about each one.

A Field Guide to the Birds of Borneo, Sumatra, Java and Bali: The Greater Sunda Islands - A very useful, if slightly bulky, field guide to this region. Perhaps a little out of date now but still the most complete guide to birds of these islands. Used alongside updated checklists, this is still a good book to have and I found it very useable when I visited this region.

A Field Guide to the Birds of Thailand - Craig Robson’s field guide to the birds of Thailand. Still the most up to date field guide for Thailand in English but now woefully out of date. Use this alongside updated checklists and beware the very variable plates.

Birds Britannica - A very interesting discourse on birds in British culture with lots of lovely photos. This is not an identification guide or behavioural guide; it focuses on how each of Britain's birds have a place in the country's culture.

Blokes and Birds - A collection of amusing birdwatching anecdotes from well-known British twitchers.

Collins Bird Guide - The best field guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe and one of the best field guides in the world. Superb and consistent illustrations, concise and informative text and with a recent update this is the book to use when birding in Europe.

Guide to the Birds of Thailand - Lekagul and Round’s ground-breaking field guide to the birds of Thailand. Although out of date, the text in this book is far superior to the newer Robson guide and in many cases the illustrations are more accurate too - they are certainly more consistent with only two artists used.

Munias and Mannikins - A wonderful book on the behaviour and ecology of munias and mannikins in the wild and in captivity.

Pocket Guide to Birds of the Indian Subcontinent - A nice pocket-sized field guide to the birds of this region. The illustrations and text make this a useful book but the range maps are all over the place!

Reed and Bush Warblers - One of the best Helm guides to bird families available. This superb guide has wonderful illustrations and photos, with extremely informative text allowing for identification of these difficult birds.

Shorebirds: An Identification Guide to the Waders of the World - An excellent identification guide to the waders of the world with lots of great illustrations of the birds in flight as well as on the ground. Excellent text is extremely informative, although this is a bit large for field use.

Starlings and Mynas - A great guide to this family of birds with excellent illustrations and distribution maps.

Stonechats: A Guide to the Genus "Saxicola"- Superb guide to the chats of the world, including ecology and regional subspecies. A wealth of information is within these pages and anyone who wants to know more about this genus will find the answers here.

The Life of Birds - The book that goes with the excellent BBC television series of the same name. An excellent account of bird ecology and behaviour.
